Recession Prepping: Changing Your Shopping Habits

As time passes, I find myself thinking more and more likely that a recession (or worse) is coming. Having lived for sixty years in various states of economic being, I wanted to share some of the things that I find useful for cutting household costs, presented in no particular order.

Meals out? Sure, but cut back so they’re for special occasions and figure out some simple ways to feed yourself if you’re not a cook; more elaborate and joyful ones if you are. I will note that the ability to meal prep itself has economic constraints: if you don’t have a kitchen, perhaps pick up a rice cooker or hot pot, which will allow you some cooking capabilities. You’d be surprised how much you can make in that rice cooker, such as hardboiled eggs, chili, and even cake.

Some cultures consider meat a luxury, and one of the advantages of a vegetarian diet is that beans and lentils are cheap as well as nutritious, full of fiber, and delicious when prepared right. This lentil recipe is one I have been cooking for forty years, courtesy of Madhur Jaffrey, and I’m making it again tonight (served with rice made in the aforementioned rice cooker).

Cleaning supplies — don’t pay a lot for perfume and packaging. Vinegar and baking soda works as a cleanser, vinegar and water cleans glass well, and olive oil with a little lemon juice makes…
